Hello! I finished up this sewing project today and even though I would make some changes for the next time I make something like this, I'm kind of proud of how this turned out. It's wonderful when you can find a free tutorial of something you have pictured in your mind. You don't really have to think about measurements. Just cut and sew! I searched and searched but I couldn't find a tutorial on how to make this exactly like I wanted so I took some tips from a couple of sources and just decided to try it out. It's always scary to start cutting into fabric! I'm always worried about making mistakes especially because fabric can be expensive. Anyway, I think my brain hurt a little during this process!
So I'm not really sure even what to call this! It's similar to the composition book cover I made HERE. But because I wanted to give this to a little toddler, I wanted to add some handles and little pockets for markers. Originally, I thought about adding a zipper on the cover or a different kind of pouch using velcro but I had to think about my sewing level! I couldn't really figure that out so I found this tutorial using this kind of pouch for crayons and handles sewn around it. Only thing I think one inch for each marker is a bit tight especially since there is a hard cover right behind it and adding all 5 markers like I wanted to stretched the fabric a bit. So that's why I ended up only putting in 3.
This is the back and I also added the little boy's name. I wanted to put the name on the front but didn't think it looked good anywhere. I was lucky enough to find some composition books a while ago when CVS
had them on clearance. I think they were only a quarter each! I bought
a huge stack and I think people thought this was odd but hello, 3 kids
and many more years of school to go. I bought a few unlined books cause
I knew even back then that I wanted to make something like this.
Hopefully the little boy will like to carry it around and doodle some
drawings.
Here's how the composition slides in. I found some measurements from a sewing book I found by chance at the library (We Love to Sew by Annabel Wrigley). It actually had a good tutorial on how to make a composition book cover but without the handles and extras. I think the cover is a bit big so next time I'll be cutting the fabric a little smaller. I love this fabric though. It's called Super Kids by Robert Kaufman. I found the plain blue and red fabrics in the remnants bin at Walmart for a good price!
Sewing on the handles was also challenging! I think I will try to make another one and tweak some things. My youngest one thinks this is a fun cover so maybe I'll be making another one although not anytime too soon. Gotta change gears and get into some paper crafting.
